In an effort to educate the public about the importance of safe vision, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has declared October as National Eye Injury Prevention Month. The hope is that by sharing some of the most common vision accidents and causes, as well as helpful tips on how to maintain healthy vision, people can avoid these injuries that happen each and every year.
While most people assume that the majority of eye injuries take place during sports or on the job, nearly half of all eye injuries happen right at home. These types of accidents can result from projects such as home repairs, yard work, or even from regular, everyday tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
A national survey conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology stated that more than a third of home eye injuries occurred in living areas like the kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom.
Over forty percent of eye injuires that take place each year are associated with sports or work related activities, but these incidents don’t include high-risk projects such as welding or machinery. Even those who work in offices run the risk of experiencing an eye injury.
One of the most important things you can do to protect your eyes in the workplace is to properly prepare for a dangerous situation beforehand. You can do this by bringing proper eye protection to help prevent and even eliminate any hazards before starting the job.
While each situation requires different types of eye protection, you should always make sure that you are prepared for any accidents that may arise while working on different projects. As long as you take preventative measures to help maintain your eye health you can ensure that your eye safety will last long after October comes to an end.
