Dr. Jonathan Yoken was named one of Portland’s Top Doctors in 2016 and 2023 by Portland Monthly Magazine.
Dr. Yoken has broad experience in all areas of medical and surgical retinal disease, but he has a particular interest in macular degeneration.
Before joining Eyehealth Northwest, Dr. Yoken served as an investigator in many landmark clinical trials of new treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions.
Dr. Yoken graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.A. degree in Biology. He subsequently attended St. Louis University School of Medicine and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Distinction in Medical Research award. He was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical student honor society. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Yoken completed his internship at The University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center. He then went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at The University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Yoken then served as a fellow in vitreoretinal surgery at Oregon Health Science University Casey Eye Institute. During fellowship, he was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship for research as well as a Distinguished Service Award. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Yoken spent three years in private practice at the Retina Group of Florida, in Fort Lauderdale, before joining Eyehealth Northwest, where he served as an investigator in many landmark clinical trials of new treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions.
Dr. Yoken has broad experience in all areas of medical and surgical retinal disease. This includes the repair of complex retinal detachments, surgical management of diabetic eye disease, macular hole and pucker surgery, repair of intra-ocular lens complications as well as complications from other eye surgeries and traumatic injuries. Dr. Yoken also has extensive experience in using the newest medical treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions. His research has been published in numerous journals, including Ophthalmology, Retina, Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He has also authored a chapter on the treatment of macular degeneration. Dr. Yoken has presented his work at many local and national meetings. He is Board Certified and an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, The American Society of Retinal Specialists and the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology.
When not working, Dr. Yoken enjoys hiking, is an avid skier and loves spending time with his wife and three daughters.
