“As a cornea and uveitis specialist, I have a great appreciation for all that the eyes can tell us about a person’s health.”
Dr. Skalet was attracted to the challenging, technical surgeries and meaningful long-term patient care in ophthalmology.
Dr. Jason H Skalet grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and did his medical training in Philadelphia at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. While there he met his wife, Alison. He also discovered a passion for the specialty of ophthalmology. Dr. Skalet was attracted to the challenging, technical surgeries and meaningful long-term patient care in ophthalmology. He spent an additional year as a student participating in research and international clinical experiences in ophthalmology. Dr. Skalet completed his ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute/University of Pennsylvania in 2007, where he enjoyed learning the breadth of ophthalmology, but became particularly interested in advanced corneal disease and inflammatory eye disease.
After residency, Dr. Skalet pursued this interest by completing a fellowship in Cornea, Uveitis and Refractive Surgery at the Proctor Foundation/University of California San Francisco. There, Dr. Skalet studied the latest corneal surgery techniques and the newest developments in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory conditions of the eyes. Prior to joining the EyeHealth Northwest team, Dr. Skalet spent four years as the sole referral cornea and uveitis specialist for East Bay Kaiser Permanente, in Oakland, California, servicing a population of approximately 300,000 patients. In this role, Dr. Skalet enjoyed seeing the most challenging medical and surgical cases in his areas of expertise. Because of his skill in handling complicated cases, he served as a referral specialist for other corneal specialists within the Northern California Kaiser system and as a surgical mentor for the UCSF cornea fellowship program, where he had an appointment as Adjunct Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology.
At EyeHealth Northwest, Dr. Skalet enjoys providing the full gamut of routine eye care, including diabetic exams, cataract checks and glaucoma care as well as taking care of both adult and pediatric patients with complex corneal, anterior segment disease and uveitis. Dr. Skalet is adept at the surgical and medical management of all corneal and external eye diseases, including lamellar keratoplasty, complex cataract surgery and refractive surgery. He is also one of a few fellowship-trained specialists in ocular inflammatory diseases in Oregon and southwest Washington. These diseases include scleritis, iritis, pars planitis and posterior uveitis—all conditions commonly associated with rheumatologic disorders and systemic infections. Dr Skalet takes great pride in being part of the medical treatment team for patients with ocular complications from these systemic diseases.
Like many of his colleagues at EyeHealth Northwest, Dr Skalet has a commitment to community service and international collaboration. He has traveled to work with local ophthalmologists in Japan, Botswana, India, and Thailand. He finds the opportunity to improve eye care worldwide and the friendships made on these international voyages deeply satisfying. On these trips he has participated in clinical research, performed surgeries, and lectured at universities.
In his free time, Dr. Skalet enjoys travel, hiking, tennis, skiing and golf. He especially enjoys exploring Portland and the Pacific Northwest with his young family and is delighted to call this beautiful area home.
