Dr. McKinney is a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist.
After 22 years of full-time practice with Eye Health Northwest, Dr. McKinney transitioned to part-time practice in 2020. While he continues to provide clinical glaucoma and laser care for his existing patients, he no longer performs cataract or glaucoma surgery. All new glaucoma consults and glaucoma surgeries are now scheduled with his colleagues, Dr. Charles Weber and Dr. Ian Danford.

With recent advances in diagnostic technology, medical therapy and surgical technique, blindness due to glaucoma is now uncommon in the USA. Our current challenge in caring for persons with glaucoma is to preserve a lifetime of good vision without diminishing quality of life.”
Dr. McKinney received his B.S. in Biology, Phi Beta Kappa, from Baylor University and also participated in Honors Study at St. Peter’s College at Oxford University. He graduated from Medical School at Baylor College of Medicine and continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University where he received a Master of Public Health, Epidemiology. Dr. McKinney spent a year as a missionary at ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano, Nigeria, West Africa. Upon his return to the United States, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology and Fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Iowa. He practiced at the Glaucoma Faculty for three years at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia before joining EyeHealth Northwest in 1998.
Dr. McKinney has served on the Executive Committee of the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology since 2000 and was President of the organization from 2010-2012. He was Chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Patient Education Committee from 2018-2023. He is a Senior Examiner with the American Board of Ophthalmology and participates in development and administration of the ABO oral exam. Like many of his partners at EyeHealth Northwest, Dr. McKinney shares a strong commitment to serving the medical needs of those living in less privileged situations. After 3 decades of short-term international medical trips focused on training local physicians through lectures and one-on-one surgical demonstrations, he now serves on the Patient Care Committee of the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, volunteers with the Clackamas Free Clinic, and does eye screenings with the OHSU Casey Eye Institute Mobile Outreach Van.
Dr. McKinney and his wife, Greta, met studying Public Health at Johns Hopkins. She is a RN with work experience ranging from the NIH treatment ICU in Bethesda, Maryland to missionary nursing in rural Benin Republic, West Africa and Terre Blanche, Haiti. They have three adult children and all share a love for spiritual growth, music, reading, swimming, skiing, hiking and camping.
