Treat your tired eyes in no time

Fatigue is frighteningly common these days, and feeling worn out all the time is just plain miserable. VSP’s Envision health insider and EyeHealth Northwest share simple ways to lasting results for looking your best any time of day.

As much as we might try to hide the fact that we’re behind on our Zs, our eyes reveal the truth. Dark circles, under eye bags, and drooping lids are a few common and convincing clues that you’re not at the top of your game.

Maybe you’re not getting enough sleep. Maybe it’s stress, a poor diet, or a combination of these. Whatever the cause may be, here are a few things you can do to help liven up those tired eyes. Take advantage of simple ways to look your best, rested, rejuvenated and bright eyed.

Sleep more. Just do it.

This tip seems obvious, but it’s easy to focus on treating the symptoms of sleep deprivation and overlook the causes. Fighting for those precious minutes of shut-eye can be difficult, but it’s not a hopeless battle. Try this approach:

  1. Make a list of your priorities.
  2. Create a time log for your average day, and get specific. Account for every 10-minute block of time.
  3. Start weeding out those daily activities that don’t match your priority list.

If you’ve honestly assessed your schedule and still can’t find more time for sleep, you might want to take note of these damage-control approaches to treating tired eyes:

Take a hint from high tea.

Some of the essential elements of a proper high tea also happen to be great for relieving tired eyes.

To temporarily reduce under eye bags, lay a couple black or green tea bags—already steeped and chilled—over your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. The cool temperature and natural chemicals like caffeine will tighten up the blood vessels around the eyes, making dark circles and puffiness less obvious.

For an extra dose of eye relief, grab a cucumber and start slicing. Cucumbers have astringent properties that help soothe tired eyes and reduce puffiness. If you don’t have any extra cucumbers lying around, place chilled teaspoons over your eyelids to get the same effect.

Alternatively, potatoes slices are help with puffy and loose lower lids, too. Take 15-30 minutes to catch your breath and treat the puff with a healthy slice of potato over the puffy areas.

Ladies, dress up those downtrodden eyes.

No time for a “tea treatment”? Some well-applied makeup might be your best bet at this point. A good cover-up tactic is to apply concealer underneath your eyes. Many stores offer free makeup consultations to help you find the right shade for your skin tone.

To make your eyes look more alive, coat your eyelids with a cream eye shadow, balm, or reflective eye shadow. Using an eyelash curler to add a little extra curl to your lashes is another way to give the illusion that your eyes are more energized than they feel. Consider adding LATISSE Prescription eyelash treatment to grow longer, thicker, and darker lashes.
